Reconstruction means?

Why was 1865 a tough year for Georgia?

• The Bulldogs went 0-11

• The governor had been arrested and the government had collapsed.

• Confederate soldiers coming home found their farms desolate and ruined.

• Many were poor and hungry

Georgia's economy in 1865 was based on:

• Manufacturing

• Indigo and Rice production

• agriculture, particularly cotton

• slave labor

Freed slaves first needed

• an education

• jobs

• medical care

• directions to their living places

Sharecropping did the following for freed slaves

• Gave them land for free

• allowed them to sell all their farm produce for a profit

• maintain good relations with their former slavemasters

• to rent land and seed and farm equipment to try to survive

Sharecroppers received...

• almost no pay

• most of the crops they grew

• the pride of landownership

The sharecropper usually had no money for rent so would pay in...

Tenant farmers, were like sharecroppers, except they

• Became wealthy over a decade or two.

Cotton production after the Civil War:

• Rose rapidly

• Dropped due to damage to the South's land

• Became an unimportant crop

• Was replaced by tomato and potato production

The North still depended on the South's production of:

• Drinking water

• Cotton

• Tobacco

• Railroad and industrial resources
