During times of war what is the "home front"?

• The site of military action and where major battles are conducted.

• Location where troops are loaded on to carrier ships along with supplies.

• The civilian population and their activities. Any aspect of wartime life.

• "Safe zone" from enemy attack. Usually reserved for elderly, women, and children to escape conflict.

Selective Service Act of 1917

• Process of obtaining volunteer women and children to perform non-threatening wartime functions.

• Forced military service, or conscription.

• Passed by Congress in 1917 to legitimately choose best candidates for promotion to officer corp.

• The fairest way possible to allocate scarce materials during military build up.

Common roles performed by women during WWI

• Aircraft delivery pilots. First time women flew military planes.

• Butchers, Bakers, and Candlestick makers.

• Dentists, Doctors, and animal keepers.

• Clerks, pharmacists, photographers, and nurses.

One way children could aid the war on the "home front" was to

• Save scrap aluminum, rubber, and plastic.

• Join a sheep club or pig club sponsored by the US Food Administration

• Slaughter their own sheep and make uniforms and boots for soldiers

• Learn how to weld, use a rivet-gun, and drive heavy equipment

To raise money to pay for the war, the government began selling

• Comic books and board games

• Victory Bonds and Liberty Bonds

By buying Liberty Bonds, Americans were

• loaning the government money that would be repaid with interest in a specified number of years

The 19th Amendment

• abolished slavery and gave african-americans the right to vote

• prohibited the sale and manufacture of alcohol

• repealed the 18th amendment that prohibited alcohol, tobacco, and firearm manufacture

• due to women's contributions during the war - the right to vote.

The Great Migration was

• A way to get people to mobilize and move heavy equipment to the ocean ports

• Moving supplies to the docks and loading ships to Europe

• A technique to avoid German U-Boats in the Atlantic Ocean

• African Americans left the South to settle in the North to fill the job voids
