What is a soliloquy?

• A lyric or poem that is 14 lines consisting of three quatrains and a couplet.

• A speech in a dramatic work in which a character speaks his or her thoughts out loud on a stage alone.

• A short story that is a work of fiction that centers on one general idea.

• A main element in fiction that plays an important role in what happens in a story and why.

What is the purpose of a soliloquy?

• To create an organization or a pattern to highlight the physical relationships of details or objects in a written piece

• To create sensory details and phrases to appeal to the reader’s senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell.

• To reveal a character’s inner thoughts, feelings or plans to the audience

• To arrange the words and lines in a poem or story in order to produce a desired effect.

To be, or not to be--that is the question:

• To be famous, or not be famous

• To take my own life instead of living/suffering?

• To obtain fortunes in life, or not be able to

• To be invited, or not to be invited

To die, to sleep-- No more--and by a sleep to say we end the heartache, and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to.

• If I die, I will never have to worry about sleep again

• Dying is like sleeping because when we sleep all our earthly problems go away.

• When I die, the earth will no longer shake

• When I wake up, I will have all new problems
