Determine means to find out or come up with a decision by investigation or reasoning.

• Synonyms: settle, decide

• Sentence: I will determine the main idea of the selection

• Part of Speech- Verb (shows action or being)

Explain means to

1) to make understandable

2) give the reason for OR cause of something

• Synonyms- clarify, interpret, demonstrate

• Sentence- Can you explain why the character was angry?

• Part of Speech- Verb (shows action or being)

Compare means to look closely at something in order to find how things are alike.

• Synonyms- find similarities, relate

• Sentence- We made posters comparing the earth and the moon.

• Part of Speech- Verb (shows action or being)

Contrast means to look at closely to find the differences.

• Synonyms- differences, unlikeness

• Sentence-We had to contrast the characters' actions. One character was tough and the other was wimpy

• Part of Speech- Verb (action or being)

Evidence means something that is presented to support the truth or give proof.

• Synonym- proof, show

• Sentence- Do you have any evidence that bike is yours?

• Part of Speech- Noun (a person, place, or a thing)

context means the parts of a text that surround a word or passage and can help explain its meaning

• Synonyms- surrounding, location

• Sentence- We used the context clues in the sentence to figure out what the vocabulary word means.

• Part of Speech- Noun (person, place or thing)
