Native Americans decided that the were going to dry strips of meat, they pounded it into a paste, and mixed it with fat. Occasionally they chose to add sugars and berries . Then they pressed it into small cakes. They called these cakes pemmican. Pemmican didn't spoil, and it provided lots of energy for people traveling or going hunting. Today explorers still carry and eat this food.

Desert animals have been able to find various ways to beat the heat. Animals in the desert sleep during the day and creep out during the night hours when it’s cooler. Tortoises, foxes, snakes, some lizards, and rodents all spend their days napping in underground burrows. Here the temperature stays about 86ºF. The kangaroo rat even shuts the door to its burrow. Kangaroo rats are able to shut their doors and burrow within to seal the heat out. Different animals are able sleep for longer amount of time rather than a day.
