A lightning bolt that flashes in the sky can reach a temperature of 60,000 degrees Fahrenheit. That is about five times hotter than the sun! The heat from lightning causes the surrounding air to expand, resulting in the loud sound known as thunder.

Rosario was enjoying her vacation in the California sun. She was lying on araft in the ocean. This was perfect, Rosario thought. There was no noise—no childrenscreaming, no horns honking—and there were no papers to grade. All she couldhear was the crashing of the waves onto the beach. Rosario sighed and lookedaround her at the beauty of the ocean. Then she saw something long and graycoming toward her on an approaching wave. She thought, “This could only be onething!” and started yelling for help. She paddled back to shore as quickly as she could. She made it to the shore in one piece , but she realized that many people were laughing at her.

Cat-egories

There are many kinds of house cats. Around 50 different breeds exist. House cats have a variety of colors and types of fur. Let's learn about a few breeds. The LaPerm actually has curly fur, which looks like it has been styled at a salon. The Ocicat has spots. It's names after the ocelot, a wild jungle cat that it resembles. The Sphynx cat can be completely devoid of fur. It has big pointed ears and looks like a cat you might see in an ancient Egyptian drawing. What kind of cat would you like as a pet?

What evidence from the text supports the claim that LaPerm cats have fur?

Horrible Hilarious Hiccups

At some point in your life, you've probably had the hiccups. Hiccups can be funny or annoying, but what causes them? Normally when you breathe in, a muscle in your abdomen called the diaphragm tightens, or contracts, and your lungs fill with air. Sometimes, the diaphragm contracts too quickly. What does that cause? That causes you to hiccup over and over. Normally hiccups only last for a few minutes. But in rare cases they can last for days or even weeks. The longest case of hiccups ever recorded was 68 years!

Snow and Salt

Snow and salt have a surprising amount of things in common. Both are white and both consist of crystals. Looking at a snowflake under a microscope, you can see little ice crystals in the shape of a star. If you study an individual salt crystal, you'll see it's shaped like a tiny cube. You can put both snow and salt in your mouth. The sure don't taste the same though. In your mouth, snow melts into plain water, while salt tastes, well, salty. Here's another difference. You can build a snowman, but you can't build a saltman.

According to the text, what do you think individual means?
