MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

5 mins • 1 pt

In the early 1600s, a British company called the Virginia Company wanted to expand and explore new land in hopes that they could make money in other parts of the world. The king of England, James I, approved their trip to the New World in 1606, and a group of businessmen set off to form the first permanent English settlement in America. The 104 settlers arrived in 1607, led by Captain John Smith, and they named their settlement Jamestown after King James.

As a result of the new settlement, many things happened. The group built a fort and other buildings designed to protect themselves. They needed protection, because the settlers had to deal with attacks from the Algonquin tribe almost as soon as they arrived. They Pawhatan tribe, however, traded with the English and helped them adjust to the new land.

Life was difficult for the new settlers, but the winter of 1609 was particularly harsh. Due to this harsh winter, less than one fifth of the five hundred colonist survived. Sixty colonist stayed in the settlement, while thirty-seven others escaped by ship.

But the settlement continued. The people grew crops and sold them to the England as well as to the Native Americans in the area. As soon as word got back to England that the Jamestown settlement was beginning to thrive and make money, more settlers came to other parts of the eastern coastline.
