When an author makes a claim he will

• give a definition

• give support for the argument or prove the point

• make the reader question idea

A good reader will look back at the text to find the answer. Which vocabulary word means to look back at or mention something?

• argue

The student was asked to demonstrate that the character in the story was feeling frustrated. How would the student do this?

• reread the story

• find evidence (sentences in the story) that prove this

• retell the story

Differentiate between theme and a topic of a story.

• A theme is the message the author wants the reader to learn from the story and the topic is the subject of the story.

• A theme is what the main character is doing and the topic is the main idea.

• A theme is like the plot and the topic is the first sentence.

If the author can give reasons to support something or against something, she can successfully do this.
