When Esperanza tried to sweep the platform for the first time, the onion jackets flew up into the air instead of into a nice neat pile. "Cinderella!" Marta laughed and pointed at Esperanza.

Josefina made an almond flan for the jamaica on Saturday night. It was one of Esperanza's favorites.

When Esperanza was taking care of Pepe and Lupe, she looked around for something to feed the babies. A bowl of ripe plums sat on the table. She smashed them up and the babies loved them. A really bad idea!!

When Mama got sick and had to go to the hospital, Esperanza said she wanted to work in the sheds. Miguel suggested she could cut potato eyes for the next few weeks.

After weeks of cutting potato eyes, Esperanza's hands were scarred, swollen and stiff. Hortenisa cut a ripe avocado, mashed it up and added glycerine, to rub onto Esperanza's hands. She said, "Keep it on for 20 minutes and your hands will soak up the oils."
