Rugby 8 - Laws

If a “knock-on” occurs, the referee will award:

• A scrum to the team that knocked on

• A scrum to the team that didn’t knock on

• A free-kick to the team that didn’t knock on

• A tap-restart to the team that knocked on

If the ball doesn’t travel 10m from a kick-off, the referee will:

• Award a scrum to the receiving team

• Award a lineout to the receiving team

• Ask the receiving team if they would like a scrum or another kick-off

• Ask the kicking team to take the kick-off again

A yellow card means:

• A warning

• Sent off for 7 minutes

• Sent off for 10 minutes

• Sent off for 15 minutes

A Red Card means:

• Sent off for the rest of the half

• Sent off for the rest of the game

• You cannot play again for the rest of the month

• You have concussion and cannot continue to play

A player is offside if:

• they are in front of a team-mate who is carrying the ball

• they are behind a team-mate who is carrying the ball

• they are in front of the referee

If the ball is played or taken into in-goal by an attacking player and is made dead by an opponent, play is restarted with:

• A scrum from where the ball was kicked

• A 22-metre scrum

• A 22-metre drop-out

• A lineout

Tacklers must:

• Immediately release the ball and the ball-carrier, and move away from the tackled player and the ball

• Be on their feet before attempting to play the ball

• Allow the tackled player to release or play the ball

• All of the above

The offside line from a lineout is:

• 5m

• 7m

• 10m

• 15m

A ruck is formed when:

• at least one player is on their feet and over the ball which is on the ground

• at least two players from each team are in contact, on their feet and over the ball which is on the ground

• the player is tackled to the ground and places the ball back towards his team-mates

• at least one player from each team are in contact, on their feet and over the ball which is on the ground

A maul is formed when:

• one player from each team are bound together and on their feet

• the ball-carrier and one player from his team are bound together and on their feet

• the ball-carrier and one player from the opposite team are bound together and on their feet

• the ball-carrier and at least one player from each team are all bound together and on their feet
