Rugby law 11 Knock-on or throw forward

A knock-­on may occur anywhere in:

• The playing area

• The scrum zone

• The playing enclosure

• All of the above

If a tackler makes contact with the ball and it goes forward is this considered a knock on?

• No

• Yes

• Yes but only if the contact is not with ball and hand.

• Yes but only if the contact is with the ball and hand.

What happens if a player knocks on?

• Play on.

• Sanction scrum.

• Sanction penalty.

• Sanction yellow card and penalty.

If there is a knock on and the ball goes into touch...

• the offending team gets to select line out or scrum.

• the non offending team gets to select line out or scrum.

• the non offending team gets awarded a scrum.

• the non offending team gets awarded a line out.

It is not an intentional knock-on if, in the act of trying to catch the ball, the player knocks on provided

• The player making contact with the ball has a full mullet.

• The player making contact with the ball does so with his head/shoulders.

• that there was a reasonable expectation that the player could gain possession.

The ball is not knocked-on, and play continues, if:

• A player kicks the ball from the hands of an opponents hands.

• A player knocks the ball forward immediately after an opponent has kicked it (charge down).

• A player rips or knocks the ball from an opponent and the ball goes forward from the opponent’s hand or arm.

• A player with an impressive mullet knocks the ball on.

A player must not intentionally throw or pass the ball forward. Sanction:

• Penalty.

• Scrum.

• Penalty try.

• Mullet shaved off.
