Starting Systems

For the starter to operate well, the following have to be in order:

• A:A good battery and good cables and connections

• B:Working starter solenoid and one-way clutch

• C:Working battery and starter motor

• All the above A,B & C are correct

If you turn the key and the starter doesn’t make any noise, the most likely reason would be:

• Flat battery

• Bad connections

• Bad starter solenoid

• Broken starter

When the starter doesn’t engage, what would you check first:

• The battery condition

• The connections

• The fuse and starter relay

• Bench test the starter

Engine is cranking but too slow, what could be the most likely reason:

• Worn starter motor

• Worn starter solenoid

• Battery condition, cables and connections

• Bad cables and connections.

Turning the key and there is a clicking noise but no cranking, what would be the sequence of checks:

• Check battery, cables, one-way clutch, starter self

• Battery, connections, fuse and relay, starter solenoid

• Battery, voltage drop tests, fuse and relay, starter solenoid

• Battery, connections, fuse & relay, starter self

With a new battery the starter is cranking too slowly, what could be the most likely reason:

• Worn starter motor

• Bad cables and connections.

• Worn starter solenoid

• Engine timing

With a new battery there is a clicking noise but no cranking, what could be the likely cause:

• The engine is stuck

• Bad cables and connections.

• Bad starter solenoid

• Bad starter motor

New battery and good connections, there is a clicking noise but no cranking, what could be the likely cause:

• The engine is stuck

• Bad cables and connections.

• Bad starter solenoid

• Bad starter motor

• The starter motor itself

• The fuse or the starter relay
