What are three types of transmission based precautions?

• Airborne, Contact, Infectious

• Contact, Airborne, Droplet

• Infectious, Contagious, Respiratory

• MRSA, VRE, Measles, TB

Standard Precautions should be used

• for patients who are febrile.

• for patients in isolation.

• for every patient.

• for the elderly.

Standard Precautions used are

• hand hygiene

• Personal Protective Equipment

• safe injection and sharps

• safe handling of equipment

• with an N95 Respirator

Proper hand hygiene includes

• using hand sanitizer when your hands are visibly soiled.

• scrubbing with soap and water for 15-30 seconds.

• scrubbing your hands to the base of your palms.

• turning the water facet off with your bare hands.

PPE--Personal Protective Equipment includes:

• gloves

• mask

• gown

• scrubs

Standard Precautions should be used when there is a potential for exposure to:

• blood, body fluids including sweat, mucous membranes

• blood, body fluids excluding sweat, mucous membranes, contaminated equipment

• blood, urine, feces, tissue samples, and patient's hair

• standard precautions are not necessary

Use Standard Precautions with the following infections:

• CMV, HIV, Hep B, Hep C, Aspergillosis

• MRSA, VRE, Chicken Pox (varicella)

• TB (tuberculosis), Diarrhea, RSV

• Rotavirus, C.Diff, HIV, Salmonella

Use Contact Precautions with the following infections:

• MRSA (mask if respiratory infection), VRE

• Adenovirus, C. Diff, Rotavirus

• E Coli, Enterovirus, Salmonella, Hep A

• Herpes Zoster (shingles), HSV, RSV (if productive cough)

• Lice (pediculosis), Scabies, Chicken pox (symptomatic, until all lesions are crusted and dried)

Use Droplet Precautions for the following infections:

• Pertussis, Influenza A or B, MRSA (respiratory infection)

• Coxsackie, Bacterial Meningitis (for 24 hours after effective antibiotic therapy)

• RSV (droplet and contact), Mumps, Rubella

Use Airborne Precautions with the following infections:

• Chicken Pox, Disseminated Herpes Zoster (shingles)

• Measles

• TB, SARS, Avian influenza--requires N-95 Mask
