Summer Fireflies

1 On summer nights

2 as the sky grows black

3 and the stars peek out,

4 I’m unafraid of the dark.

5 I wait for the fireflies to appear

6 and light a path through the yard

7 from my swing to my porch.

8 Like glittering night-lights,

9 they brighten the lawn:

10 sparkles above the grass,

11 twinkles in the bushes,

12 on off on off on off on.

13 I sit on the swing

14 and catch one in my hands,

15 letting its wings tickle my fingers.

16 When I glance inside,

17 my fingers are glowing

18 from its tiny light.

19 I want to keep it—

20 but I want it to be safe.

21 So I let it go free

22 to join its friends and

23 guide other children

24 through the dark summer

25 night.
