ONLINE INFORMATIONS

Some information is not intended for students your age. How can you decide if a website has material that is appropriate for you?

• Google has everything! Just start there.
• Everything online is true. It doesn't matter if it's appropriate or not.
• Ask yourself, "Is the author's language and vocabulary intended for me or for someone older/younger than me?"
• If the page is blocked, that's a sure sign the website has inappropriate content.

Finding information that is up-to-date is also important.  What can you look for on a website to let you know how current the information is?

• title of the website
• date last updated
• author of the website
• works cited

Which domain names are 99% safe to use for research because they are valid sources?

• .edu, .mil, .gov
• .com, .net, .org
• .edu, .com, .org
• .mil, .net, .org

When you evaluate websites, what does checking for accuracy mean?

• That only the information is correct for the past year 
• How reliable is the info.  Can you cross reference it?
• That people who created the site didn't make errors
• That the information was used to figure out something complex

What does bias mean?

• Some trying to persuade you or has a strong opinion about things
• It is an argumentative technique used by certain people
• It is factual information not opinion
• People who think differently

Why is locating the author important on a website?

• To be able to contact them if you need to
• You need to make sure the information is credible
• The site won't work if there isn't any author.

What is plagiarism?

• Using someone's information, but giving them credit.
• To steal and pass off ideas as your own
• Citing sources
• Putting quotes around text
