A portion, part, or subset of the big group. This is used because it is too hard to collect data from the big group

A sample that is collected where every subject has a fair chance of being chosen. Usually unbiased because it is randomly selected. An example would be picking a name out of a hat or drawing a popsicle stick with a name on it.

Gathering data so that the results are favorable to one side of the population. The researcher is able to get the results they want to show.
