Engine Lubrication

The engine oil sump is made usually made from one of two materials they are.

• Iron and Steel

• Cast steel or Pressed aluminium

• Cast Aluminium or Pressed steel

• Plastic and Carbon Fibre

The oil pick up pipe is fitted with a mesh over one end this is to

• Prevent large foreign objects being sucked into the oil system

• To strain the oil and keep it clean

• To filter the oil down to one micron

• To increase the oil pressure

The oil pump is fitted with a pressure relief valve what is its job

• Relive pressure in the cooling system

• Relieve pressure in the fuel system

• Relieve pressure in the lubrication system

• Relieve pressure in the induction system

Why is the oil filter housing a separate part of the engine

• It allows different housings to be fitted for different applications

• It helps to cool the oil

• It is an expensive part

• It makes production easier

• The oils ability to withstand heat

• How long the oil should stay in the engine

• The colour of the oil

• The Viscosity

Oil should be changed frequently, how do we know when to change the oil.

• It doesn't matter oil can be changed when we repair the engine

• By following the manufacturers guidelines in the manual or on Autodata

• By visually inspecting the oil

• Just fill it up when it leaks out!
