Democracy and Freedoms

Freedom of speech means being able to.....

• say whatever you want, whenever you want

• write or publish anything you want

• to express opinions publicly without government restraint or censorship

• being able to swear and say rude words in public

freedom of speech includes...

• speaking in public

• written communication

• cartoons, artwork, and performances

• all of the above

freedom of speech DOES NOT include...

• hate speech and advocating violence

• being able to criticize others

• being able to criticize the government

• comedic parodies of politicians and other people

freedom of association means....

• being able to go to a protest

• being able to associate with anyone you want to

• being able to work for whoever you want to

• being able to join any political party, religious group, trade union, or sports club

freedom of assembly means....

• people can go into a public or private place to express their views

• when there is a school assembly, students can do whatever they want

• people cannot go to a protest

• people can join any sporting club or religious group they want to

freedom of religion means.....

• anyone can join a holy war against infidels

• people can follow the religion of their choice or no religion at all

• people can believe whatever they want

• people can follow any religion that the government approves

freedom of movement means....

• anyone can come to live in Australia

• people can dance wherever they want

• Australian's can go on holiday wherever they want

• Australian's can move freely within Australia and choose where they live

Democracy means....

• a system of government that is run by the people, for the people

• a system of government that is run by one person

• a system of government that lets citizens vote on every law

• a system of government where citizens can run the country themselves

Representative democracy means.....

• citizens vote to elect representatives to make decisions on behalf of them

• citizens get to vote on every new law

• citizens can form their own parliament

• citizens do not get a vote for laws

Democracy allows its citizens to....

• have a say in how the country is run

• vote to have politicians represent them in parliament

• ensure that their opinions and beliefs are acknowledged and heard

• all of the above
