Why do floods happen?

• There is too much water on earth.

• If too much rain falls too quickly the ground becomes completely covered in water. The longer the rain falls, the higher the water will rise.

• Water can not be controlled.

How does a built up area increase flooding?

• The water enters the river more slowly

• Less water is absorbed because concrete and build up areas are not permeable surfaces (water cannot go through)

• There is more opportunity for the water to be absorbed because concrete and built up areas are permeable surfaces (water can go through)
