PBIS for BMS 2021-2022

What is PBIS?

• A system to reward students and track bad behavior

• A framework built on behavioral philosophies and processes designed to improve school climate

• A program consisting of prizes, rules, and tracking bad behavior

The "positive" in Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports stands for:

• Handing out prizes, tickets, and having events

• Positive language and positive student-teacher relationships

• Students are only rewarded and there is no more discipline

What is the reason we would want to use PBIS at BMS?

• Prevents problem behavior

• Help kids and teachers build better relationships

• Increase learning time and decrease time spent on behavior management

• Clarity of expectations, teaching and modeling them, and reteaching when needed

• All of the above

How would you redirect a student running on the playground?

• "Please don't run."

• "If you run, you will get hurt."

• "If you walk I'll give you a ticket."

• "Please walk."

How do students learn the school expectations?

• They are posted in the classroom and around the school.

• They are explicitly taught, modeled, and practiced with the teacher at the beginning of the year and when students return from school breaks.

• We only need to teach kinder because 1st-6th will know it from the previous year.

• It is the parents responsibility and they should learn it at home.

Do students have different expectations depending what adult is talking to them?

• Yes, everyone has different tolerance levels for behavior.

• No, expectations are consistent with all staff, producing a less stressful environment because teachers are predictable and less reactive.

• No, we have too many different staff members to be consistent.

• Yes, everyone will use the expectations that are important to them.

How do we positively reinforce expectations that have been taught, modeled, and practiced?

• Award student a ticket

• Verbally praise them

• Give out 4 verbal positive reinforcers to every 1 correction

• All of the above

Restorative consequences include:

• Sending students to the office for every major

• Giving the same consequence for a behavior regardless of the student, context, or grade

• Taking away something so the student will learn a lesson

• Practicing the correct behavior, providing an intervention and/or support to help change behavior

Why should we reward students for doing what they are supposed to be doing?

• In life, adults are rewarded for doing what they are supposed to do.

• Students are more happy at school and behavior better when they earn rewards.

• Not every student comes to school with the foundational social and emotional skills to be successful.

• We want to encourage students to come to school so they can earn prizes

Once you stop giving tickets out for a positive behavior, will students stop demonstrating that expectation?

• Yes, students won't follow expectations if they aren't rewarded.

• No, with all the verbal praise that accompanies the ticket, intrinsic motivation is supported. The positive behavior becomes the norm in our school culture.

• Yes, tickets are a great way to bribe student to behave.
