Respect Scenarios

Another student has taken your pencil during a lab to quickly write down some observations they made during the lab. What do you do?

• Rip the pencil out of their hand and scream at them.

• Take something of theirs. It's only fair.

• Calmly express how you feel about it. Politely ask that they return the pencil when they are done. You're not using it right now and they needed it.

• Do nothing, but let the issue stir in your mind for weeks before eventually exploding over a non-related event.

A student in your group is not pulling their weight on a group project. What do you do?

• Take over the entire project and do it all yourself. You're never going to get them to help.

• Calmly express your feelings to them about their participation. Make them feel welcome in your group. Help them understand the assignment. Assign them a role in the project. Make sure they feel heard and give them the opportunity to express their ideas.

• Give up and just fail the project. If they're not doing it, neither are you.

• Scream at them. Obviously there is something wrong with them.

Another student is loudly talking to their friends during your presentation and you cannot focus. How do you respond?

• Ask them politely to stop talking or take their conversation elsewhere for the good of the group.

• Give up. If they don't want to listen, you're not going to make them.

• Charge them up with lots of personal insults. They disrespected you. It's personal now.

• Just keep talking louder in your presentation and hope they stop. Maybe the rest of the class will hear you then.

A student has playfully pushed you during a lab. You're having a bad day and it made you mad. What do you do?

• Choose violence. Hit them and start a fight over it. It's on now!

• Politely express your feelings about it, ask them to stop, and remind them of our lab safety rules.

• Cuss them out. They had it coming!

• Excuse yourself and walk away from the situation until you calm down.

You borrowed a box of colored pencils from the classroom supplies but you're feeling salty about a grade you disagreed with on last week's test. What do you do?

• Break every single on of them. That will show them!

• Throw the the pencils on the floor along with some other trash. Make them work for it.

• Take the pencils home with you. They're yours now. Who cares if someone else needs them.

• Use the pencils to work on your assignment and return them in good condition. Politely ask for feedback about the grade. Ask for opportunities to correct the test or take a different one.

Class is boring today. You don't like the topic or the activity. What do you do?

• Make up an excuse to leave and then wander the halls for 30 minutes.

• Meet with your teacher to discuss some activities that you would like to do instead. Ask for more information about why the topic is important to learn.

• Activate class clown mode. This class isn't going to make itself fun, so time to get the laughs.

• Retreat into my cell phone. I might miss the information I need to know, but I have texts to reply to and Tik-Toks to watch.
