Define selective attention...

• The process of recognizing information from the display.

• The process of being selective with what information they see in the display.

• The process of attending to relevant cues within your display.

• The process of selecting what is relevant and disregarding what is irrelevant.

What is input?

• Receiving information through our senses.

• This is information stored in our short term memory.

• This is the information we recognize to then process.

• This is information that is given to the performer.

The short-term memory can store...

• 9 pieces of information for up to 90 seconds. And can store these pieces of information forever.

• 3 pieces of information for up to 30 seconds. And can not retain these unless rehearsed.

• 7 pieces of information for up to 60 seconds. If it is not rehearsed it will be lost forever.

• 1 piece of information for 60 minutes. And can be stored then into the long term memory.

The long term memory can store... and helps with...

• 700 pieces of information for up 60 years. Helps in the decision making process.

• Unlimited amounts of information for up to 20 years. Helps in the feedback process.

• 200 pieces of information forever. Helps in the output.

• Unlimited amounts of information forever. Helps in the decision making process.

What is decision making?

• Where we select the appropriate action or response. Based on relevant information from the input.

• Where we choose what to do based on the information from our senses.

• Where we make a decision on what to do next following the feedback we have received.

• When we use our display to give an output.

Output is...

• The action based on feedback.

• The response to the input given from the display.

• The information that our brain sends to our muscles to carry out the response.

• The result of correct selective attention.

What is feedback?

• When a coach gives us feedback on how we performed.

• Where we receive information about how we performed the skill, whether that be intrinsic or extrinsic.

• When you know how you performed the skill.

• When you feel that the skill was performed well.

Intrinsic feedback and extrinsic feedback comes from.

• From ourselves including kinaesthetic feedback and from others.

• From an internal coach and an external coach.

• From internal feelings and external factors such as coach and team mates

• Your proprioceptors and coaches.
