The torrential downpour that happened at the beginning of the story made me think about all of the flooding that happens in so many countries and how devastating it must be for the people who lose their loved ones, their possessions, and their homes.

When the 2 sisters in the novel sneak out of the house, I'm reminded of my older brother who tried to do the same thing one evening. But, Mom and Dad caught him as he headed out the door. He got in SO much trouble. I felt bad for him - but he deserved what he got.

After reading the story, I felt so angry. The characters in the story were being treated so unfairly. They were children and being made to work long hours, for little pay. The wizard in the story reminds me of my Uncle Edward. They share some of the same characteristics: A long grey beard, piercing blue eyes, and a laugh that makes you wonder if he's laughing at you or with you. I don't think that my Uncle has magical powers, though.
