The torrential downpour that happened at the beginning of the story made me think about all of the flooding that happens in so many countries and how devastating it must be for the people who lose their loved ones, their possessions, and their homes.

The part in the story where the students are standing up to the principal because they are being treated unfairly, reminds me of a poster that I once saw that said, "Speak Up." It had a young child with a hand over his mouth and the message was to stand up for what you think is right.

The argument in the story between the mother and the father makes me think about divorce and I wonder how many kids live in families with divorced parents.

The ending of the story reminds me of a movie I saw last weekend. In both the movie and the story, the main character was found in the woods and reunited safely with his parents.

The opening of the story reminds me of my favorite place in the world - the beach! The author describes the crashing waves, the warm sand, and the sea gulls overhead. I love spending time at the beach in the summer with my friends.

When the 2 sisters in the novel sneak out of the house, I'm reminded of my older brother who tried to do the same thing one evening. But, Mom and Dad caught him as he headed out the door. He got in SO much trouble. I felt bad for him - but he deserved what he got.

After reading the story, I felt so angry. The characters in the story were being treated so unfairly. They were children and being made to work long hours, for little pay. It makes me wonder about the other children who have been in the same position in the past and who are in those conditions now.

The wizard in the story reminds me of my Uncle Edward. They share some of the same characteristics: A long grey beard, piercing blue eyes, and a laugh that makes you wonder if he's laughing at you or with you. I don't think that my Uncle has magical powers, though.
