Presidents Practice 1: 28-37

I knew no career but the military when I became President. I served in Panama and the Phillippines before commanding the Allies during WWII.

In my first two years as President, I ushered in an array of legislation. I lowered tariffs, established a graduated income tax, the Federal Reserve System, and the Federal Trade Commission. Later, I signed laws banning child labor and limiting the workday to 8 hours.

My Quaker background taught me the importance of service to others. I led humanitarian food programs for those displaced by WWI. In 1917, I was asked to manage the nation's wartime food conservation programs.

My primary foreign policy triumph was normalizing U.S. relations with China following a state visit to Beijing.

In my first inaugural address, I famously stated, "...the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself."

During my tenure in the House of Representatives, I went on active duty in World War II and received a Silver Star for "gallantry in action."

During my Presidential campaign, I participated in the first four face-to-face televised debates, winning over many Americans with my charisma and confidence.

During my Presidency, I relied heavily on the Republican Congress for direction and guidance. I eliminated Wartime controls, cut taxes, raised tariffs, and tightened immigration.

During my first Presidential campaign, I promoted my own version of progressive reform called "New Freedom," which emphasized small business and "the man on the make," instead of the man who has already succeeded.

When the Korean War began, I did not hesitate to send troops. But after I fired General MacArthur for insubordination, I was pelted with paper cups and other flying objects while throwing out the first pitch at a season-opening game in Washington, D.C.
