• needed it for hunting for food so he would not leave the island hungry

Drifting off to sleep, Cole thought that surviving on the island would have been.....

• as cruel as being locked up in a cell.

Cole was not able to go back to sleep during the night after being awaken by

• a loud shuffling and crackling from the grove trees

• a low moaning noise from the ocean

• an eerie stillness that made him wonder if the Spirit Bear was prowling about

Cole got the fish that he ate by

• spearing it ina shallow pool at the edge of the stream

• grabbing it s tail and throwing it onto the stream's sandy shore

• taking it from some seagulls

Waiting a few days to leave the island until better weather returned was out of the question for Cole because...

• Edwin and Garvey would have returned to check on him by then

• he knew it was not safe to stay on the island with the Spirit Bear

• he wasn't one to wait

When he again saw the Spirit Bear standing on the shoreline and staring at him, Cole grabbed the spear and the knife blade and....
