"Gat Uban" or also known as Gat Pangil Jr., is a Dumagat, A Hero known to fight the Moors and liberated their village 400 years ago. He is called Gat as a respect equal to the Honorable or Sir in English and usually used for the heroes of the country who fought and sacrificed for the freedom we enjoy today."Uban" means gray hair. He's given an alias of Gat Uban because of his age of 20 he already had gray hair, he was a leader of the tribe of the five groups.His village is now a town called "MaUban" located in province of Quezon in the Philippines, the town is named after him their hero, our hero. Situated in Barangay Macasin, Dahoyhoy Falls is probably the most accessible and popular waterfalls of the town. The trail going to this falls is well established, completely cemented and with signages for direction and distance. It is closed to villages and along the trail to other communities of Barangay Maasin.But despite its proximity to communities and its popularity, Dahoyhoy Falls lacks the usual touristic crowd and generally unspoiled by the mass tourism. Although the pool itself was already altered to cater to tourists, there is a high chance that you will get to own the place specially on weekdays and off season.

During the war, the Japanese imprisoned Horacio de la Costa for two months in Fort Santiago for his role in resistance movement. He helped Rev. Fr. John F. Hurley, the Jesuits' superior, in taking clothes and medicines to American and Filipino soldiers who had evaded capture by the Japanese or escaped from Japanese prison camps. I was thrilled when I was invited to attend a Mass last Friday for the blessings of a show that will premiere soon. The officiating priest was Fr. Gilbert ''GT'' Talabong from San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish Church in Mauban, Quezon. He drove three and a half hours from Quezon to Quezon City just to celebrate that mass. Fr. GT gave a meaningful homily that reminded me of the importance of family and our relationship with family members. If there are three things this pandemic should have taught us, its 1. to love and appreciate one another; 2. accept our flaws and shortcomings ; 3.to be generous with praise and forgiveness. What are the things this pandemic should have taught us?

It was near sunset when we dropped by Rizal Hill Park (locally called Calvario Hill), along San Buenaventura St. in Brgy. Rizaliana.  To get to the top, we had a  choice of taking the shorter route (climbing a steep concrete stairway) or the longer route via a winding ramp skirting the hill.  Of course, we chose the latter.  At the top of the hill is a statue of National Hero Jose Rizal, erected on December 1912 by the Mauban Circle Association of Students.  The  park offers a panoramic view of the whole town.  In olden times, the hill was used as a sentinel post and a place for religious activities during the Spanish era, as headquarters by American troops, as an outpost by the Philippine Constabulary during the Japanese Occupation and, after the war, by the Civilian Emergency Administration. Mauban town in Quezon province recently celebrated the Maubanog Festival, showcasing its rich history and cultural heritage centered on the Christian faith and its buri palm weaving industry.

Maubanog is from the town’s name and the word “bangog,” meaning “high spirit.” It was highlighted by the street parade and street dance competition, participated by 17 primary and high schools, including a contingent from the Dumagat ethnolinguistic group.

The Maubanog Festival song and the “Nilala” (weave) song and dance were utilized by the competing participants to represent some of the town’s famous people, such as the Dumagat leader Gat Pangil, also known as Gat Uban, whom the town was believed to be named after, and Jesuit scholar Fr. The whole town of Mauban is prided for its fine quality of arrack, a distilled alcoholic drink produced in South/SE Asia. And if you're wondering, yes that's where our word "Alak" comes from. In Cagbalete, more than the famous Coconut tree, we use a different palm tree called the Nipa. This is an estuarine type of palm that grows in swampy areas and can thrive like Mangroves. When the Nipa tree bears fruit, a slight incision is made in the stem of the flower/fruit and a hollow bamboo collects the sap. The sap is then brought to the makeshift distillery and is cooked there. There is even a local ritual done to the first few drops gathered. The old way of putting flavors in the Alak is by soaking some Raisins or local Blackberries called Liputi. Tita Lynn of Nilandingan even has some tapayans of Lambanog which was distilled about 35 years ago.. What is Nipa?
