P5 Term Two

Prior to the formation of the army, the responsibility of defending Singapore fell solely on the (a)   forces stationed on the island as well as two battalions of regular soldiers and volunteers from the Singapore Volunteer Corps.

Prior to the formation of National Service, The two regular battalions were the First Singapore Infantry Regiment (1 SIR) and the Second Singapore Infantry Regiment (2 SIR), formed in 1957 and (a)   respectively.

Besides these initial steps, the Ministry of Interior and Defence also planned for the long-term development of the capabilities of the Singapore Army by establishing the volunteer-based (a)   Defence Force in December 1965 to replace the Singapore Volunteer Corps.

The army also gained its air and sea elements with the establishment of the Singapore Naval Volunteer Force in January 1966 and the Singapore Air Defence Command in September 1968, which became the Republic of Singapore (a)   and Republic of Singapore Air Force respectively on 1 April 1975.

The People’s Defence Force (PDF) was established as a part-time paramilitary defence force following the enactment of the People’s Defence Force Act 1965. The PDF’s predecessor was the Singapore (a)   Corps (SVC), which began in July 1854.

During its formative years, the PDF had about 3,200 (a)   who were placed in a number of battalions, including the original 10th PDF infantry battalion, engineers unit, artillery unit and a women’s battalion.

RSS (a)   (P68) was the first ship of the Republic of Singapore Navy.

The Infantry is the branch of an army made up of units trained to fight on (a)   .

Shortly after the start of World War II, Goh Keng Swee joined the Singapore Volunteer Corps, a local militia which was part of the (a)   Settlements Volunteer Force, but returned to his previous work after the fall of Singapore.
