Design Goals:

• Any functional requirement is a design goal

• Are identified with respect to design methodology, design metrics, implementation goals

• Are one of the 8 issues of object design

Subsystem Decomposition:

• Identification of subsystems, services and their relationships to each other

• Providing an interface with a group of externally visible operations

• Partitioning a subsystem in loosely coupled classes and subsystems that are related to each other via many associations

Architectural styles:

• A layered architecture is closed when a layer can call operations from all layers below

• A open layered architecture fulfills the design goal portability and achieves low coupling

• A 3 tier architecture is a SW architecture where the 3 layers are allocated on separate HW nodes
