Eye protection must be used to:

• improve your vision

• prevent eye strain

• prevent flying particles, sawdust, foreign objects, or corrosive substances from entering your eyes

• magnify small objects

Floors, aisles, and passageways must be kept clear of wood, tools, material, oil or greats spots and other objects:

• because they may cuase someone to slip or trip and fall

• unless you are in a hurry

• because they are unsightly

• because they cause more work for the custodians

Rags wet with linseed oil, solvents, or finishing products must always be:

• folded neatly and placed on a shelf

• discarded in an approved metal waste container with a lid, to prevent spontaneous combustion

• wadded up and thrown in the trash

• left on the floor

Loose clothing, jewelry and long hair must be securely fastened or removed:

• before operating any machine

• before the end of class

• only when you are assisting the instructor

• only when it will not affect your fashion look

You must not talk to, or distract the attention of, a person operating a machine because:

• conversation slows down the flow of work

• it is not polite

• the distracted operator or others may be injured

• it is too noisy for conversation in the lab

All accidents and injuries, no matter how slight, must be:

• ignored

• reported to health services immediately

• reported to the instructor immediately

• none of the above

Wearing gloves when operating machinery is:

• considered a safe practice on a cold day

• permissible if the machine is dirty

• safe, provided the gloves are not made of leather

• not a safe practice because the gloves may get caught in moving parts and pull your hand into the machine

When lifting a heavy object your should:

• get help

• keep your back straight and lift with your legs

• use a lever, dolly, jack, forklift, wheels, or rollers

• do one or more of the above, depending on the situation

• rushing or hurrying

• overconfidence

• fatigue

• ignorance

When cleaning a paint brush you should:

• use soap and water

• rinse until all the paint is removed

• hang it up to dry above the sink
