In order to collect data on instruction-giving, praise, and time out, only the first instance of each behavior during each 20-s interval was coded.

After the observer had been cued that an interval had begun, using a beep from a signaling device, the student’s target behaviors had to be continuously present during the entire interval in order for the observer to record it as an occurrence of the target behavior.

The rater scored and counted each word spelled correctly in student's journal writing.

The observer used a recording cuing her every minute to the time for observation/recording. At each 1 minute point, the observer made a judgment about the occurrence of behaviors in each category and recorded the results on a specially designed data sheet.

For 20 minutes during the first half of a math class, off-task behaviors that occurred at any point during the 10-second intervals were scored as off-task.

Each recorder wore a wireless headset to hear a pre programmed message that announced “record” and the interval every 10 seconds so that each recorder did not chose when to collect the data and write down the results.

On-task intervals were recorded only when the entire interval consisted on on-task behaviors. The data collector wore headphones to hear the tones emitted every 10 seconds.

Over the observation session, each time a student left the seat an occurrence of the behavior was recorded.

The observers monitored the behavior of one client for 10 seconds, followed by monitoring the behavior of the next client for 10 seconds and so on. Within each 10 sec observation interval observers recorded whether any of inappropriate behaviors occurred at any time during the interval. The observers also recorded whether the client was engaged in a task at the end of each 10 second interval.
