Tan uses pathos throughout "Mother Tongue" when she describes her relationship to her mother. Tan's story conveys love, respect, and embarrassment. Many readers can relate to in these feeling in their own relationship with their parents.

[Tan] tells us she isn’t an English scholar, but instead she says this. “I am a writer. And by that definition, I am someone who has always loved language” (Tan 20). While this doesn’t sound like much for credibility, it shows her appreciation for the language, but it also means she spends a great deal of time using the language and by that, is experienced with the English language. This quickly answers the question of credibility, so the reader isn’t questioning that while reading the essay.
