What does a Foley Artist do?

How do you properly play music during a production?

• Play the song on the device with the volume off, then slowly turn the volume up to fade music in

• Turn the volume all the way up and press play

• Press play with the volume low, then turn volume up

• You don't need music during a production

When someone is recording a sound effect, the surrounding people should-

• Try to record another sound effect at the same time, so it's quicker

• Whisper to the person next to you, the device won't pick up your voice

• Be extremely quiet and still so the device does not pick up any extra sound

• Grab something you need out of your backpack

When you are recording a sound effect you should-

• You don't need to record sound effects

• Hold the recording device close to the sound, stay quiet when recording, then listen to the sound to ensure it is effective

• Laugh and talk while you're recording. It wont pick up your voice.

• Set the recording device down and press record. Do the sound effect and move on

You are choosing songs to play in between scenes of a murder mystery script. What kind of songs should you pick?

• Rap music. Everyone loves that.

• Pop music. This script is depressing and needs a pick up.

• Songs that have a creepy or dark feel to them. Maybe instrumental so we don't take away from the scene.

• Heavy metal.

You have to create a door shutting sound effect. You should-

• You don't need to do what the script says. Forget the door.

• Just record the classroom door shutting.

• Make the sound effect with your voice. You do a great door impersonation

• Try different methods to see what sounds the best. Maybe two woods blocks hitting each-other?

You have to record a sound effect of a horse galloping. You should-

• You should change it to something else.

• Just move on to the next one. You don't know how to do that.

• You should look up a recording of a horse running and use that.

• Look at the supplies you were given and try different things to see how they sound.

You have to do a voice over recording for a character. You should-

• Refuse to do it. You're not an actor.

• Read the line with no emotion.

• Speak quietly. The device will pick up your voice.

• Read through the line a couple of times without recording to practice. Then record the line with emotion.
