Read the following text and mark the correct answer

The Central Sofia Market Hall

The Central Sofia Market Hall is better known by the simpler name The Market Hall. It is a covered market in Sofia city centre, on Marie Louise Boulevard. It first opened in 1911 and remains today both an important place for buying and selling goods and a well-known landmark with a distinctive architectural style.

The building was designed by one of Bulgaria’s most famous architects, Naum Torbov. Bulgaria, and Sofia in particular, is dotted with the over 100 buildings this prolific man designed, of a public, residential and industrial nature. Among them are the Hotel Continental, the Romanian Institute and the Craftsmen Association building.

Torbov’s idea was selected from among a number of candidates. Begun in 1907, the building was completed by 1909. Believed to be Torbov’s masterpiece, it was created in Neo-Renaissance style, while at the same time containing definite features of Neo-Byzantine and Neo-Baroque architecture. Above the main entrance can be seen the coat of arms of Bulgaria, created by artist Haralampi Tachev, and above that, at the very top of the building, is a beautiful clock tower with three clock faces.

Inside, the huge windows and high ironwork ceilings give a great sense of light and space to the interior, and it is cool on the hottest Sofia day.

Until the 1940s, the place was run by the local government of Sofia, which rented out spaces for 170 shops and stalls. Major changes were made to the

interior in the 1950s and it closed altogether in 1988 for major repairs and reconstruction. In 2000, it opened once again, under the management of Ashtrom, a company which had bought a 75% share in it and invested $7 million.

Today over 1,000 people work in the market, which now covers three floors and sells everything from food and clothes to accessories. On the top floor is a large supermarket which is said by some to be the oldest in the capital. It is close to both metro and tram stops, and opposite Tsentralna Banya Park, which is home to the 16th century Banya Bashi Masjid mosque. Due to the market’s central location, it is popular with tourists on the hunt for souvenirs, and both these and the food on offer have a reputation for high quality and reasonable prices. There is also plenty for those looking for a sit-down meal or drink, though visitors should have cash with them, as not all stallholders and shopkeepers accept credit cards. The market is open seven days a week from 7:30 am to 8 pm.

If you don’t find what you want in the market, a simple solution is just around the corner. On the other side of the park is the famous and quite enormous Central Department Store, or TSUM, as locals call it. This 1950s building contains all the names in fashion, perfumery and luxury accessories, and at seven storeys high and covering over 20,000 m2, there is no question of the visitor not finding what they want there!

QUESTION:

When was it reopened for the last time?

1940

1950

1988

2000
