The Compass was developed in China, The Astrolabe in Greece and the art of Cartography that made sea voyages possible - that was developed in Egypt. Only the Sextant, an improvement over the Astrolabe, was invented in the Netherlands. Today we place Egypt into the "western world" but in the time we're studying it would not have been seen as such.

The Age of Explorations

Answer explanation

The Commercial Revolution was an economic, social, and political revolution that affected cities, regions, and states throughout Europe. It began in the 12th century and accelerated into the 20th century. Without this development many historians argue that modern day capitalism would not have occurred.

Which of the following were historical consequences of the development of the Columbian exchange and the commercial revolution that it helped accelerate? (There may be more than one right answer given what you learned from the reading)

The development of Capitalism

Answer explanation

Media Image

The reading makes it very clear that the Columbian Exchange helped accelerate the Commercial Revolution. This acceleration made a brutal form of black enslavement, both mercantilism and capitalism and the militarization of both African and European governments possible in the 17th and 18th centuries. Although Europe was able to counter this militarization in the 19th and 20th centuries - Africa and other areas impacted by this historical consequence are still feeling the effects of intergenerational trauma.

Answer explanation

Hi class - I hope that you said that your starting to see something historians call "Change over time" or a "Turning Point" in history. The Age of Absolutism developed as a response to the challenges created by the Commercial Revolution and the Columbian Exchange that helped accelerate it. Absolutism was not something old - it was something new. Even though absolutists will use divine right as the reason why they have sovereignty (the right to rule) - this argument would not have been made in the early centuries in Europe. Only the pope and his clergy would have been able to determine who had the right to rule - not the king or his court. In addition - the Absolutist ideology that was becoming accepted in much of Europe was also spreading to places in North and South America and Africa. It's important that we recognize this because it will help us unpack the terrible impacts of this history on places in Africa and the rest of the "non-western" world in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
