3.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

1 min • 1 pt

Sammy seems disappointed to see “old McMahon” looking after the three swimsuit-clad girls and “sizing up their joints.” This is arguably doubly ironic, first because McMahon is a butcher and knows something about “joints,” second because

the girls have no idea they are being sized up

the beach is five miles away

Sammy is also checking them out

Answer explanation

Irony can be tricky, or at least the understated kind shown here, where the text means more than what it says.  Overstatement (hyperbole) is comparatively simple, merely exaggeration.  Two of these options are too literal to be ironic; the third, like McMahon’s occupation, we’re supposed to understand, without having to be told.  With that said, even literal statements can be interpreted in more than one way.  Take the fact (directly stated) that the beach is five miles from the store.  Is that near or far?  It’s both.  It’s too far to justify walking into the A&P in swimsuits, but it’s too near when you consider that “there’s people in this town that haven’t seen the ocean in twenty years.”
