What is a Learning Intention?

• Tells students how to behave when learning.

• A learning goal over a period of time or a unit used as a basis of tracking student progress.

• A measurement of student achievement toward the learning goal.

• Just something a teacher says for fun at the start of the lesson.

Entry Routines

• Promote positive transitions into class and when consistently used create a sense of comfort for students

• Should be known by all students from day one without the need for explicit instruction.

• Are the same at the beginning and end of a lesson.

• Can be used in exchange for Learning Intentions and Success Criteria

Success Criteria

• Are the measures that show teachers the level of students' attainment of a Learning Intention.

• Are the descriptions of what students should know by the end of the lesson.

• Are discussed only by students to measure their success.

• Are the same for all students regardless of their ability or knowledge on a topic.

Cognitive Verbs

• A measurement of student achievement toward the learning goal.

• A person, place, animal or thing that students normally think about and are interested in.

• Are ways and actions we take when we are thinking about learning. They describe thinking and are not new in the classroom. They can be explicitly taught by the teacher.

• Is what students will be able to do by the end of the lesson.
