How do you use the Matte input port in the node view?

the order in which connected drawings are composited goes from right to left. Each node connected to the Matte-Composite's input ports has its own composite mode as well as its own invert setting. Each input connection has its own set of Input parameters, which determines how each node connected to the Matte-Composite node is composited into the resulting matte.

The effect will only be applied where the matte overlaps the original image. Sometimes the matte will act as a negative shape that the effect will exclude. This all depends on the nature and editing properties of the effect.
