History:

noted that children who recovered from small pox did not get it a second time, deliberately infected young children with ground smallpox scabs and reduced mortality and morbidity

demonstrated protection from smallpox with inoculation with crusts from a person infected with cowpox

conducted experiments with pasturella multocida - demonstrated an effective vaccine against organism

formulated vaccines for polio, measles, mumps, rubella in US - now have vaccines for chicken pox, hep. A, hep. B, and many more

Vaccine Types:

1. modified live vaccines, tend to elicit vigorous response and may provide contact immunity to those around them, reduce virulence so still living but no longer cause disease, grown in tissue culture until lose virulence or genetically manipulated, risk in pregnant women or immunosupressed
