A major conflict that began after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in 1914 which resulted in Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia.

This war resulted dur to growing tensions between the alliance of major European powers: the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente - which led to more of the major European nations becoming involved.

The assasination of this person (and his wife) was one of the main causes of WWI. They were shot by Gavrilo Princip with the aim of freeing Bosnia from Austria-Hungarian rule and establishing a common South Slav state. The assassination was also intended to break Austria-Hungary's provinces so that they could form Greater Serbia or Yugoslavia.

However, it resulted in Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia.

Germany's plan for the invasion of France which called for an attack on Belgium. It was proposed by a man named Alfred von Schlieffen and was aimed to be a quick of France before turning on Russia, however it failed and resulted in bringing Britain and Germany into war with each other.

A war where distinctions between the soldiers on the battlefield and civilians are blurred, and where massive government intervention in society and the economy ensures support for the war effort.

A type of fighting behind rows of trenches, minds, and barbed wire. It was designed to protect troops from machine-gun fire and other attacks from the air. However, the cost in lives was staggering and the gains in territory minimal.

A military campaign during WWI which took place on the Gallipoli peninsula. It was intended to allow Britain to bring supplies to Russia while attacking the Ottomans, however it was a bloody failure for the Allies because their warships were unable to force their way through the Strait of Dardanelles, leading to a costly failure with nothing gained.
