The Berlin Blockade was when Joseph Stalin cut off access to W. Berlin (democratic sector) in an attempt to take control of the entire city. The Berlin Airlift refers to the American response to this event. To avoid a direct military confrontation, American planes flew food and supplies into west Berlin to keep them from starving. Stalin was forced to lift the blockade and W. Berlin remained free from Communist control.
