Spelling Rules 1: -s, -es, -ies, -ed, -ing, ie/ei

If a word ends in a silent -e, drop the -_ and add -ing or -ed.

If the final syllable of a word is stressed and has (a)   vowel, double the consonant when adding the suffixes: -ed or -ing.

occur + -ed =

prefer + -ed =

If the final syllable of a word is stressed AND has --- vowels, just add -ed and -ing.

complain + -ed =

If the final syllable of a word ends in -_ , change the -y to -i before adding -ed, BUT keep the -y before adding -ing.
