Woman: Well, apart from being stranded at the airport for 24 hours, it was idyllic.

Man: Oh, I wondered if you'd been hit by the strike.

• I hadn't realized there was a strike.

• It was lucky the strike didn't delay you.

•  I was concerned that the strike had affected you.

Man: I've never been much good at dancing.

Woman: You'll pick it up in no time – take my word for it

• I'll help you if you find it difficult.

• I know it won't take you long to learn

• I'm sure you'll be able to do it eventually.

Woman: I'm just here in the office chance that Dr. Brown may be able to see me.

Man: Please take a seat and I'll see if I can fit you in.

•  I assume there's a good chance that I can see Dr Brown.

• It's unlikely but I was hoping to see Dr Brown.

• I don't think it's possible to see Dr Brown.

Woman: How's work these days?

Man: Actually, I'm finding it hard to cope with the stress.

Woman: There’s more to life than work you know!

• You should learn how to manage stress.

• You should place less emphasis on work.

• You should consider looking for a new job

Man: By the time the government wake up to the real threat of global warming, we'll all have webbed feet.

Woman: What a cheerful man you are!

What does the man mean?

• If we protest hard enough the government will recognize the problem.

• Global warming is a problem that not even governments can tackle.

• Politicians aren't going to take the problem seriously until it's too late

 Woman: Finished fixing that plug yet?

Man: It's proving trickier than I thought.

Woman: It's not exactly rocket science, you know.

What does the man mean?

•  It was difficult but I managed to fix the plug.

• I haven't been able to fix the plug yet.

•  Fixing the plug was no problem
