Known as "The Father of Texas," he carried out his father's plan of bringing 300 families to Texas. Where his father worked with Spain, the son worked with newly independent Mexico. He set up a colony between the Colorado and Brazos Rivers.

Mexico finally gained independence from Spain in 1821 when a revolutionary leader, Iturbide, negotiated for a constitutional monarchy. Spain was busy with a civil war, so they let Mexico go, after nearly 150 years.
