Performance Assessment

What is a performance assessment?

• A test in which the student is required to fill out a machine-scored answer sheet.

• A test in which the student is required to work with other students.

• A test in which the student is required to construct an original response.

Ratings usually apply to performance assessments where students produce a product. 

Observations apply to performance assessments where students perform a behavior.

The Generalizability Dilemma 

• Performance tasks sample many skills at once and therefore it's difficult to develop an adequate rubric. 

• Performance tasks are generally inauthentic and so it's difficult to make generalizations about your student's true capabilities.
