The former nation of Yugoslavia was located on the Balkan Peninsula. The nation was created after World War I to bring together the many cultures of the region. The population of Yugoslavia was made up of many ethnic groups that often fought with each other. There were also more than forty different religions in the region. The many different ethnic groups made a unified government difficult to maintain. These differences resulted in civil war that lasted through much of the early 1990s.
