MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

The Alamo is perhaps the most well-known mission in the state. Since being built, the Alamo has served as a military base, jail, and hospital.

During the Texas Revolution, Texans were on hand to defend the Alamo and ready for battle against Mexican General Santa Anna. For days, Texas soldiers fought to protect the mission and the people of San Antonio. Despite their willingness, they were unable to defend the mission. Santa Anna and his army defeated the Texas soldiers, leaving no survivors. In response to this event, "Remember the Alamo" became the battle cry of the Texas Revolution. The desire to get justice for the men who died at the Alamo was an incentive for the soldiers to win the war. Their determination to never give up defending Texas has historical significance even now.

There are two parts to this passage.

Part A

Why is the Alamo such an iconic landmark in Texas?

It served as a jail and hospital.

It served as a church and place of worship.

It was built to assist the Native Texas.

It serves as a symbol of the spirit of Texas.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

30 sec • 1 pt

Spanish missionaries came to Texas and built 26 missions from 1632 to 1793. These missions are where the missionaries taught people about their beliefs. They also helped make Texas a better place to live and work. In East Texas, there was a mission called San Francisco de los Tejas Mission. It was built in 1690 to teach the Hasinai tribe about Christianity. However, the Hasinai tribe didn't want to change their beliefs, so they took things from the mission. This mission was far away from the others, making it hard to get the supplies they needed. Because of this, it didn't last very long and closed in 1694. The missions were built to bring more people to Texas and to share Spanish beliefs with Native Americans. Today, only a few of the 26 missions are still open. Some are used as special churches and others are landmarks that we can visit and learn about. The missions are an important part of Texas history and culture.

This question has two parts. First, answer Part A. Then answer Part B. Part A: How did the building of Spanish missions help further the goals in Texas?

They were famously known around the world.

They were built to undermine the natives.

They were built to convert people to their religion.

They were an economic boost to the land.
