Formatting Quotations

What is a DIALOGUE QUOTE?

• A quotation that directly shows what a person says

• A quotation that takes parts of a person's words but incorporates it into MY sentence

So how can I tell that I have a DIALOGUE QUOTE in front of me?

• There is a verb indicating that someone is talking, usually right before the quote

• There is at least one full sentence quoted

• It is directly stated in the sentence WHO is talking

• All of these will be true

QUICK: Write down as many SPEECH VERBS as you can think of! (Ex: "says" or "states")

The student in the class who has the longest list will win extra credit :)

What is a FLOW QUOTE?

• A quotation that directly shows what a person says

• A quotation that uses part of what someone says but incorporates it into MY sentence

So how can I tell that I have a FLOW QUOTE in front of me?

• Only part of a person's words might be quoted

• It may not be clear who is talking. There may not even be a verb indicating that someone IS talking.

• The word "that" might appear before the quotation

• All of these may be true

What is used most commonly in books and in the MELCon paragraphs you've written in the past?

• Dialogue quote

• Flow quote

Which type of quote REQUIRES that you use a comma before the quotation AND a capital letter at the start of the quotation?
