“This is my favourite read of all time. I love true stories and find them easier to engage with, I’ve never really been a fan of fiction, although you could argue that some of Henri Charriere’s adventures seem a little far-fetched to be believable. It’s a story of a man wrongly accused (or so Charriere says) of a murder and sent to the toughest penal colony prison in French Guiana. He escapes several times with worsening consequences each time he’s caught. An incredible story of extreme resilience through adversity.”

“The "Three-Body Problem" trilogy (三体) by Liu Cixin is a renowned series within the science fiction genre, both in China and internationally. "The Dark Forest" (黑暗森林) is the second book in the trilogy and continues the epic narrative initiated in "The Three-Body Problem" (三体). It delves deeper into the cosmic struggle between humanity and the Trisolarian civilization.”

“I find it impossible to say what my favourite book is. It’s like being asked ‘which was the best french fry you’ve ever eaten?’ They’re all pretty amazing, and how do you choose one above so many others?! In the end, I picked a book I loved when I was your age:

This was the first book that taught me that literature could be funny: painfully, rib-breakingly, I-can’t-breathe-I’m-laughing-so-hard funny. Before this I thought that books were serious, and The Simpsons was funny. This changed everything I thought about books and joke-writing. It has lots about school life, growing up and adapting to change too. If you haven’t already, read it!”

"I rarely read a book more than once, however ‘Blueback’ is an exception. Tim Winton is an Australian writer, surfer and environmentalist who writes beautiful stories about people living in the space between the natural and human worlds. His stories are usually about the richness of life lived when we engage with nature. In this case, the story revolves around a young boy who befriends a huge fish, the Blueback, while diving for abalone (a type of edible shellfish) in his local bay. However, danger lurks, in the form of commercial fishing in the bay and the boy is constantly aware that Blueback is forever in danger from their nets.

Like all Tim Winton’s stories, Blueback is beautifully written, without being an environmentalist manifesto. It’s a story for all ages and can be enjoyed by children and adults. If you enjoy this story, try ‘Breath’, also by Tim Winton, which is an homage to surfing and is equally evocative but for older readers."

“I absolutely loved this book as a child. It is a story about loyalty, love, courage and perseverance. The little wooden horse tries to make his fortune for his Master but faces immense challenges along the way. It is a great book for showing children that we can overcome adversity and how acts of kindness really make a difference.”
