There was once a little red hen that lived alone in the woods.

One day a sly old fox moved into a nearby cave. 

He saw the hen when he went hunting in the forest.

The fox spent much of his time thinking of a way to catch the little hen. 

He planned to cook her for dinner!

But the little red hen was always careful to lock her door. 

At last the fox thought of a way to catch her. 

One early morning, he waited for the little red hen to leave the house. 

She wanted to collect sticks for her nest.

While she was busy collecting sticks, the fox walked through the forest towards her house.

He carried a bag with him and he sneaked into the hen's little house. 

The little hen got scared when she saw the fox in her house. 

She flew up onto the roof quickly. 

“Get down here!” shouted the fox.

"You can't catch me here," said the hen to the fox.

"Are you so sure of that?" asked the fox.

The sly fox began chasing after his own tail. 

He ran in a circle faster and faster. 

The little red hen became very dizzy watching him.

She fell off the roof and the fox quickly put her in his bag. 

He then started walking home with a proud smile.

But the fox was tired from all the running, so he lay down for a little nap. 

When the fox slept, the hen woke up. 

She took out a pair of scissors that she carried in her scarf. 

The hen cut her way out of the bag.

The clever hen filled the fox's bag with stones before running home. 

The fox soon awoke and carried the bag into his house. 

He filled a huge pot with water.

• ..

Then, he waited for it to boil. 

When the water boiled, the fox opened his bag and poured it into the water. 

But when the stones splashed into the hot water, the fox was scalded badly.

The fox shouted loudly in pain. Since that day, he never bothered that hen again!
