Manifest Destiny

Mexico's Independence (1820s)

• In the 1820s Mexico gained independence from Spain. By the 1830s Americans will outnumber Mexicans in the Northern province of Mexico known as Texas.
• This term refers to the land that Mexico ceded to the United States in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This includes California and the New Mexico territories.

Stephen Austin

• Name given to the thousands of people, mostly men, who poured into California in 1849 during the Gold Rush.
• This military officer and his troops overthrew Mexican rule in California establishing the Bear Flag Republic. Later he would become the first Republican presidential nominee.

General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna

• Name given to the thousands of people, mostly men, who poured into California in 1849 during the Gold Rush.

• In this election the Democratic candidate James K. Polk defeated the Whig candidate Henry Clay.
• In the 1830s this man made himself dictator of Mexico and tightened control over Texas.

Sam Houston

• This man won the 1840 presidential election. He died of pneumonia after serving only one month as president.
• In this election the Whig candidate William Henry Harrison defeated the Democrat Martin Van Buren.
• This man led a group of Americans in Texas who declared Texas independence. Later, after the success of the movement, he will become the president of the Lone Star Republic.
• In September 1847, during the Mexican-American War, U.S. forces, under the direction of Winfield Scott, defeated the Mexican Army in this battle. The fall of Mexico City ended the Mexican-American War.

Battle of the Alamo

• Name given to the thousands of people, mostly men, who poured into California in 1849 during the Gold Rush.
• This battle of the Mexican-American War saw U.S. General Zachary Taylor defeat Mexican forces at Buena Vista, located in Mexico.
• In 1848 Gold was discovered in California. In 1849 thousands of settlers flocked to California to strike it rich.
• Battle during the War for Texas Independence in which all of the approximately 200 American soldiers died trying to hold off Mexican soldiers in 1836.

Davey Crockett

• This American folk hero, frontiersman, and politician died in the Battle of the Alamo in 1836.
• This 1846 proposal would have banned slavery in the territory acquired in the Mexican-American War. The proposal did not pass.
• In 1845 Texas was annexed by the United States becoming the 28th state and the 15th slave state. The annexation of Texas led to problems with Mexico.
• In this election the Whig candidate William Henry Harrison defeated the Democrat Martin Van Buren.

Battle of San Jacinto

• In the 1820s Mexico gained independence from Spain. By the 1830s Americans will outnumber Mexicans in the Northern province of Mexico known as Texas.
• Vice president who became president in 1841 upon the death of William Henry Harrison. During his last days as president he arranged for the annexation of Texas.
• This 1846 proposal would have banned slavery in the territory acquired in the Mexican-American War. The proposal did not pass.
• This 1836 battle, during the War for Texas Independence, saw Texan forces, under the command of General Sam Houston, defeat General Santa Anna.

Lone Star Republic

• Name given to the thousands of people, mostly men, who poured into California in 1849 during the Gold Rush.
• In 1845 Texas was annexed by the United States becoming the 28th state and the 15th slave state. The annexation of Texas led to problems with Mexico.
• Between 1836 and 1845 Texas was an independent nation known by this name.
• Vice president who became president in 1841 upon the death of William Henry Harrison. During his last days as president he arranged for the annexation of Texas.

The Texas Statehood Issue

• This 1846 proposal would have banned slavery in the territory acquired in the Mexican-American War. The proposal did not pass.
• The treaty that ended the Mexican-American War. Mexico recognized the Rio Grande as the southern border of Texas, Mexico ceded California and the New Mexico territories to the United States, and the U.S. paid $15 million to Mexico.
• In this election the Democratic candidate James K. Polk defeated the Whig candidate Henry Clay.
• The issue of annexing Texas and making it a U.S. state was complicated because the U.S. did not want to go to war with Mexico and the entrance of Texas as a slave state would upset the balance between slave and free states.
